The Gray House tells the story of the four women General Ulysses S. Grant credited as helping the North win the Civil War. It focuses on the unsung women who turned the tide of the American Civil War in favor of the North. A Richmond Socialite and her daughter, a formerly enslaved African-American, and a courtesan build the first successful female spy ring, operating right under the noses of the Confederate High Command. They risk life and liberty to help win the war and preserve American Democracy.
Project Information:
The styleframes feature key elements from the series: Firework torches frequently appear, setting opponents' belongings on fire. The color palette remains consistently gray, a reflection of the gray house, with contrasting orange symbolizing fire, light, and more within the gray scale.
A vintage portrait of Elizabeth is framed against wallpaper that resembles the architectural style of the era. A cigar burns near a piece of art representing slavery, revealing another artwork symbolizing the Civil War’s efforts to abolish slavery, with Elizabeth’s writings consistently nearby.
Mary Jane, a Black woman pretending to be a slave to gather secret information, uses her photographic memory to recall Confederate maps and strategies. The maps appear in her eye, with veins resembling the engraved maps she memorizes. Old letters, burned and sealed with wax, also play a recurring role.
A grayscale train with an orange light at the front symbolizes escape and the transportation of secret information vital to ending the war. Shadows cast by light represent the four women who played crucial roles in the war’s end.
Light unveils the gray house, revealing hidden information within the leaves. Titles are styled with typography that reflects the era, newspapers, and news. Finally, the gray light returns to its original color, revealing the creators and codes within Elizabeth’s writings.
